LED strip lights becomes very popular in the recent years. You could use LED strip lights as cove lighting, or direct linear light. 

It's most possible that this article would help solving how to choose the right power supply for your LED strip lights. Let's get start. 

Before going on

You might need to classify what type is your LED strip lights. For the full definitive guide for LED strip lights, please check this page.

  • Constant Voltage LED strips: This is the most common type of strip lights. DC5V, 12V, 24V, etc.
  • Constant Current LED strips: This is not the common type but is also  widely used in LED lights. You might need to know more for choosing the right driver for this type.
  • RGB or LED strips with ICs: Not only you need to consider choosing the right power supply, you might also need to worry about the controlling

Constant Voltage LED strip lights

Constant voltage LED strip lights means the input voltage of the LED strips are fix in voltage. For example, DC12V, or DC24V, etc.

Step 1

So first, you need to know what is the input voltage of your strip lights. 

Easy, you can know from the surface of the LED strips in most cases. 

If no, you might guess from how many LED chips per cut. 3 LEDs will be 12VDC input generally. 6 LEDs will be 24VDC.

Step 2

Identify the total power consumption of your LED strip lights. 

It's related with the density and length of LED chips. The more LED chips and longer the LED strips, it's more likely to be more power consumption. 

The power/meter can be found on the packing. 

Tips:
Try not to use LED strip lights for over 5 meters. The reason will be the voltage drops for over 5 meters will have significant impact on the brightness.

Example

the labeling of the LED strips tells:


Input 12VDC, Power: 8Watts/m.


And you are going to use 3.5 meters.


The total power consumption for this LED strip lights will be:


8Watts/m * 3.5m = 28Watts.

Step 3

The last, we need to use a power supply to provide capacity bigger than the actual LED strip light's power. 


Normally, capacity of 120% of the total led strips power will be enough.


So, back to the example. 

 28Watts * 120% = 33.6Watts.

Conclusion

Any power supplies in 12VDC output, and with capacity of over 33.5Watts will be okay.


You might found these powers are popular in the market: 35W, 50W, 60W, 75W, 100W, 150W, 200W, 250W, 300W, 350W, etc.


So, 35W of DC12V power supply will be the right choice. 50W or 60W will be alternative choice if you cannot find 35W.


Can I use 350W power supply for only 33.6W LED strips?

Of course you can, only it costs more and with much bigger size.

7 tips for choosing power supply for constant voltage led strips

  1. If the label only shows: Power < 14.4W/m. How can I know the actual power per meter for the LED strips?

Well, that is a bit difficult. You might guess from the quantity of led chips per meter as follow:

  • 60 chips/m, power is around 8 watts/m.
  • 120 chips/m, power is around 14watts/m.
  • over 200chips/m, power is around 18-20Watts/m.

But this will vary for different formats of LED chips. 

2. If you connect one end of the strips to the power supply, the longer strips you are using, the unit power per meters will be decrease. 


For example, you are connecting 1 meter of DC12V led strip lights with 14Watts. What is the total power if you connect 5 meters of the same strip lights? 14Watts/M * 5 = 70Watts?


The actual power will 70Watts, should be around 60-65Watts. The reason is that the unit power consumption will decrease when you connect longer.

3. If you measure the total power consumption of the LED strip lights with power supply, you might found that the total power is actually bigger than the one you calculated from the LED strip light parameters


The reason will be the total power consumption consists two parts: the actual led strip light power consumption, and also the power consumption of the power supply.


Every single electrical device will have its own power consumption. The bigger it consumes, the lower efficiency it got. Good quality power supplies will have over 90% efficiency, meaning that only consumes maximum 10% of the total power consumption. 

4. Not just focus on the output parameters of the power supplies, you must also pay attention to the inputs. 


You need to know what is the electricity inputs of your region or country. There are many types of them all over the world, differ from AC110V, AC220V, AC240V, and AC277V.


So it's a MUST to make sure you also choose the right inputs for the power supply as well. 

5. Connecting LED strips to power supply on only one end, please make sure the length of the LED strip light not exceed 5 meters. This is only advice for low voltage input led strip light, for example DC12V or DC24V. 

If you really need longer than 5 meters length, try to connect both ends to the power supply. It might get better effects comparing to connecting only one end.

6. In most cases, people do not pay attention to the cables using for connecting LED strips and the power supply. But the fact is that it's very important for low voltage input led strip lights.

Let's do a simple maths.


Using 100Watts of power supply for 80Watts of DC12V led strip light in AC220V electricity:


The input current of the power supply is:

80W / AC220V = 0.3637A

The output current of the power supply is:

80W/ DC12V = 6.67A

Now you can see the difference.


So please make sure that you use the big enough cable for the output, and not for long.

7. For constant voltage power supply, as long as you use big enough capacity, it's okay to use much bigger capacity one for small power LED strip lights.

For example, using 400Watts power supply for only 10watts of led strip lights are

We classify almost all led strip lighting by many different ways, and giving all pros & cons of each one. You might feel crystal after reading. Let's get start. 

LED strip light classifications

Firstly, we are going to classify all the led strip lights by the following specifications:

1. by SMD types of LED chips

2. by outer sealing materials

3. by Input voltage

4. by LED colors

5. by controlling

6. by apparent shapes

by SMD types of LED chips

LED strip lights consist with three major parts: substrate, LED chips, and necessary accesories.

The core part is LED chips. So when we differ the types of LED strips by LED chips, we could have the following.

SMD5050 led strips

SMD5050 is one of the earliest SMD LED chips. The unit power of this 5050 is rarely small, around 0.05-0.1W at the first beginning. But it becomes much bigger power in later times, and now it can be range from 1-3 watts per chips. 

SMD5050 is also the most common LED strips. The reason is the large size of SMD5050 which is 5mm width, times 5mm length. And the six pads are also the main reason for the popularity. Since 6 pads can combine at least 3 different colors of LED chips inside one SMD5050.  And also we have 8 pads for more different functions.

You might found that the RGB LED strips are mostly comes with SMD5050.

SMD2835 led strips

Besides the SMD5050, the SMD2835 will be the next popular LED strip lights. SMD2835 is widely used in down lights, T5 or T8 tube, and outdoor lightings as well, thanks to the medium high power (range from 0.2-1W) and stable performance, 

There are only 2 pads for a SMD2835 chips, so it is used only for single color.

SMD3014 led strips

SMD3014 might show up a bit early than SDM2835. It got regular 0.1Watts per chips. Most of the back-lit applications are used SMD3014 due to the small size (3.0mm length x 1.4mm width). 

In the LED strip light usage, the SMD3014 can not do better than SMD2835, no matter in power, brightness, stabilization, etc.  However, it can be used in low power strip lights or somewhere needed to be slim size.

SMD3528 led strips

SMD3528 is the elder brother of SMD3014 & SMD2835. It got bigger sizes than SMD2835, but with lower power, around 0.1W per chips. It becomes out of market during the popular of SMD2835.

SMD5730/5630 led strips

5730 & 5630 are nearly the same format without significant difference. This size of LED chips got high power (0.5-1W, typical 0.5W) and brightness, with the advantage of large size. It is not common in the usage of LED strip light. However, it was quite common used in High Voltage LED strips.

COB Strip lights

COB means Chips On Board. Unlike the SMD LED chips, which the  wafer is placed within the bracket, and connected with pads by golden wires. COB is a technique to place the wafer directly into the circuits, without brackets or golden wires. Later, a continuous fluorescent powder will be glued on the surface. 

This is a new types of LED strips, and with the advantage of a continuous light beam. And surely will be the future trend of LED strip light.

By the apparent sealing materials

As we mentioned earlier, LED strips are consist of soft or hard substrate, LED chips, and necessary accessories.  We could classify the types of strips by the apparent sealing materials as follow.

Raw Strips

Substrates, LED chips, resistants, and connecting cables, sometimes with back tape, that are all the necessary parts of the strips light. This is the basic type of LED strips, we called it Raw Strips. Even you can see the soldering pads and also you can touch them. However, thanks to the low voltage design, it's still very safe to use this raw strips.

Half-irrigation Strips

For some cases, we still need protection for the LED chips and pads. Such as washing rooms, shower rooms, etc.  When we place a layer of transparent silicon glue on the LED side, that is called  half-irrigation LED strips.

The silicon provide protection from dust & fog for LED chips, and the back side remain the same, with back tape. So it uses just the same, but with more protections.

Full-irrigation Strips

Same as half-irrigation strips, when we place transparent silicon or PVC glue for all sides of a raw strips, we can get a full-irrigation strips.

This type of strips can be used for outdoor or even underwater.  There are also some cons either. The brightness will get decay, and also the color temperature will be shifted as well. Typically, the color temperature will get 200-300K higher. For example, a strips with 2700K in raw strip type, will shift to around 3000K in the full-irrigation type.

PVC Strip

PVC strip is made by extruding milky+white PVC outer materials into the raw strips.

The milky PVC is placed just on top of the LED chips, so we could get a continuous light beam. And the white PVC is placed for the other parts, to achieve a better appearance.

There are some cautions before using this PVC Strips. Be aware not to use in applications of acidic or high temperature scenes. Otherwise, the PVC materials will get aging, hardening, and muddy.

Silicon Pipe Strip

Comparing to PVC materials, Silicon got much better performance. 

  • More stable, even in severe chemical applications
  • resist to high temperature,
  • anti-aging, will not muddy during long time usage,
  • waterproof, excellent insulation resistance.

In a word, silicon is perfect, but expensive. It's a smart way to use silicon pipe, with the less silicon, but powerful effects. However, the silicon pipe is transparent, so we will still see dots for each single led chips, not a continuous beam.

Silicon Strip

The ultimate solution will be extruding milky + white silicon sealing materials plus the raw strips.

Same comprehensive advantages of silicon pipe strip, and also a constant beam. Nice! what left is budget.

 Hard Substrate LED Strip

Almost all the above strips we talked are based in soft substrate, so called Flexible Printed Circuit Board (FPC). The main advantage will be flexible, bendable. 

We still have many applications in only straight linear way. For example, stairs, cabinets, cove ceiling lights, ect. So the Hard Substrate LED strips are also in great demands. 

Normally, we will use aluminum as the substrate. Aluminum PCB Strip lights is as follow:

Aluminum Profile Strip Lights

Aluminum profiles, a very popular word in the recent years of decoration. Actually, it's a combination of raw strip lights, inside a particular structure of aluminum profiles, normally comes with a milky or sanded PC cover. 

This type of strip lights can expand into hundreds of different sizes and structures. You can easily found particular aluminum profile for any applications.  Such as: stairs, cabinet, skirting board, cove lights, linear designs, etc.

There was some time when we thought that the Covid-19 has temporary past in China. And we will be back to normal in a short time. However, things get the opposite of what we want. 


Due to the lack of water in the past year, the hydropower in China has significantly decreased. And the summer comes lot sooner than ever this year, resulting now we are lack of electricity now. And this situation was not seen in the past decades in China.


So now, lack of ICs, rising prices of materials, and lack of electricity. Most of the manufacturers in Guangdong, Hunan, Jiangsu, Zhejiang province now have to closed 2-3 days a week because of no electricity.  In a result, the lead time of each order will get delayed AGAIN.


That is all?  


The Covid-19 now is back to China. Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Foshan, these three cities are under attacked by the new Covid-19 virus. Some districts are quarantined and schools, shops, shopping malls, and also factories are closed.  2021 the 26th Guangzhou international lighting exhibition has announced a postpone to unknown time. The 2021 lighting industry surely will get really bad impacts. and we have to hold on by our own efforts, wishing all bad things past soon.

Beginning in the January 2021, the LED lighting raw materials was getting start to rise. Materials like aluminum, copper, carton paper, packing paper, PC, ABS, silicon gels, ... almost every kind of materials to making a lamp are rising the prices. 


We could see many LED manufacturers began to rise the LED lighting product prices at the past several month. Base on the historical experiences, the raw materials will fall after the Chinese New Year. However, the 2021 is so special. we could see from the above diagram that aluminum and copper keep rising prices in the past month, even the past half year, and sees not stopping.


Many more LED manufacturers cannot stand for that, and more announced rise in prices also.  Would that be the only problem for the lighting business in 2021?  NO WAY！

ICs Out of Stock

You might heard of the news that Smart phone CPU and ICs are in short supply at the beginning of 2021. But you probably not knowing that not only the Smart phone ICs, but all ICs for all industries are in short supply, and many are out of sock.


If you are in the LED Driver or Power Supply related business, you might found out that it's so hard to get even one plate of ICs. We are back to the primitive society that people are not trading ICs in money, but in another ICs. In a result, we are now really out of supply of LED drivers, or power supplies, or controllers.

Late Delivery Time

All materials are rising prices, so suppliers are not willing to have more stocks. So each materials need longer delivery time.

And ICs are out of stock, in a result of a really late or even endless waiting time for a LED driver.

Rising labor cost, and lack of labor also be a headache for LED lighting manufactures.
